The world is full of hope. Plenty of ads claiming to restore, or erase bad credit to avoid bankruptcy. However, not all credit repair agencies are able to live up to reputation. Many of these companies will charge you a bomb and then just disappear. Fortunately, there are signs by which you can appraise the trustworthiness of such companies and protect you against getting scams.

Most fraudulent companies will always ask for upfront payment for their services before actually providing them, do not trust them. This is the first sign of scam. Also, If they just simply tell you to let them handle everything without explaining to you what your legal rights as a debtor are and strongly advise you not to contact the credit bureau directly, this is clear sign of scam.

Do not use Employer Identification Number to replace Social Security Number. If you are told to do so, you are violating the laws. Do not believe them.

A bad credit identity history is normally reported for seven years and cannot be changed, whereas bankruptcy information can be reported for as long as ten years. So if the information is correct, no one else can erase it. However, people with bad credit can learn how to improve credit score in 90 days. Learn it, implement it, and maintain a healthy score throughout. Unless you can prove that the information it contains is incorrect. Only then you have the legal rights to request that your record be reinvestigated, according to the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

Once you have supported documents to correct your bad credit history, either get a dispute form from the credit reporting agency or compose a written dispute yourself. Include all documents and prove to support your dispute and specify clearly the items to invalidate. Once you are proven your dispute was justified, request that the correct version of your report be dispatched to all credit bureaus who have received your credit report during the past six months. Even if the investigation does not result in a favorable change, you can request that future reports should include your dispute.

If you ve evident the credit repair company you ve hired run afoul of the law, do not hesitate to inform your local consumer affairs office or your state attorney general s office. You ve helping others, too.
